Communication at a time of crisis is both an art and a science.  School-level and District-level leaders require the savvy and perseverance to communicate clearly, openly and concisely to all community members.  Our opening keynote, by Robin Sears, with years of experience in a wide variety of sectors, will highlight steps to be taken and lessons learned so all of us can take away some key messages to incorporate into future communication planning.

Here's what attendees from past Law Works institutes had to say after attending:

"An excellent workshop. Practical and innovative."

"One of the best workshop/conference I have ever attended.  Really liked 6 minute education lawyer feature."

"This is the third time I have attended this conference always presents valuable up to date info."

"Really enjoyed the case study and interactive nature."

The landscape of Ontario education has grown ever more complex. Educational leaders must respond to an increasingly diverse array of issues and problems from school, district and community-wide perspective. A clear and up-to-date understanding of the framework of provincial and federal laws and of recent jurisprudence related to education and schools is a must for every effective administrator.

Location: OISE, 252 Bloor St. West, Library

Start Time: 8:00am (registration begins)

VISIBLE LEARNING

Featuring: Dr. John Hattiehattie poster

John Hattie is Professor and Director of the Melbourne Education Research Institute at the University of Melbourne, Australia.

Professor Hattie’s work is internationally acclaimed. His influential 2008 book Visible Learning: A synthesis of over 800 Meta-Analyses Relating to Achievement synthesized the results of more than 15 years’ research involving millions of students and represented the biggest ever collection of evidence-based research into what actually works in schools to improve learning. The study found that positive teacher-student interaction is by far the most important factor in effective teaching. His recent book, Visible Learning for Teachers released in 2012, takes the next step in explaining how to apply the principles from Visible Learning to any classroom anywhere in the world.

VISIBLE LEARNING: AN OVERVIEW

John Hattie will expand on the key aspects of his research related to maximizing impact on students: which teaching strategies work best?

Boys Literacy Teacher Inquiry Project
Continuing Education, OISE had the provincial lead on the English Language teacher inquiry project with goals to embed research-based strategies to improve boys’ literacy achievement.  One hundred and fifty three schools were involved in one hundred and seven projects within every school district and several provincial authorities were represented.

Continuing Education was responsible for program design, implementation and outreach to all school teams.  Initiatives to date have included design of regional provincial symposia to introduce the project, creation of support booklets and production of two supporting video tapes.  Support through technology is underway.  An final report chronicling best practice was prepared for provincial distribution. Outreach to schools has been underway.

Design and development of regional inservices for each school team began in January 2007. Several OISE faculty have and will continue to be advisors on aspects related to teacher inquiry and boys’ literacy as well as act as experts on upcoming video tape(s).

School Self Review Tool: Ministry of Education Educational Leadership Centre
In December 2005 the Ministry of Education issued a seventh mini discussion paper prepared for the Education Partnership Table “Leading Education.” The paper identified areas for future action toward a comprehensive strategy designed to strengthen school leadership and to support principals and vice principals in meeting today’s challenges of school leadership.

A Leadership Self-Review Tool (LSRT) was created to provide feedback to school district leaders as to the views of school and system leaders and personnel as to how effective are district strategies to support the important work of raising student achievement  for all students.  Ontario school boards were invited to pilot the tool.

Continuing Education had the provincial lead on the creation of a report to both review the ministry tool, identify best practices related to district implementation and outline highlights of leadership development within each of the five districts.  Results were used to revise the LSRT, to modify support materials and findings were used in the design of the provincial launch.  The report was issued to all school districts at the provincial launch in December.
