hattieProfessor John Hattie visits OISE

The Office of Innovations and Opportunities hosted internationally acclaimed Professor John Hattie, Professor and Director of the Melbourne Education Research Institute at the University of Melbourne, Australia on April 19 for two public sessions.

Professor Hattie's influential 2008 book Visible Learning: A synthesis of over 800 Meta-Analyses Relating to Achievement synthesized the results of more than 15 years’ research involving millions of students and represented the biggest ever collection of evidence-based research into what actually works in schools to improve learning. The study found that positive teacher-student interaction is by far the most important factor in effective teaching. His recent book, Visible Learning for Teachers released in 2012, takes the next step in explaining how to apply the principles from Visible Learning to any classroom anywhere in the world.

In the first public session, John expanded on the key aspects of his research related to maximizing impact on students: which teaching strategies work best?

The following panel discussion, both vibrant and informative, featured Hattie, Ben Levin (OISE Professor), Mary Jean Gallagher (Chief Student Achievement Officer of Ontario & Assistant Deputy Minister, Student Achievement Division, Ministry of Education), Michael Fullan (Professor Emeritus, OISE) and was moderated by Ruth Childs (Associate Dean, Office of Innovations and Opportunities).

Video of both sessions will be posted on our website as soon as it is ready!

swartzLarry Swartz new book

OISE instructor, Larry Swartz has written a new book along with Kathleen Gould Lundy entitled Creating Caring Classrooms. This passionate book is about community, compassion, and creativity; it is about caring for others. It is also about helping students care about their work. Teachers will learn how to establish inclusive classrooms where kindness and concern become crucial backdrops for critical conversations. They will be introduced to simple but profound strategies that initiate and maintain respectful dialogue, promote collaboration over competition, and confront difficult issues such as bullying and exclusion.

Thank you...

suonOn behalf of myself and I hope most of the principals that are back in Chile, I'd like to thank you all for supporting this outstanding program, for sharing experiences, and research that leads to educational improvement, and the importance of the role of the Principal in this process.

I also would like to thank you for believing that change is in our hands, and that we have to keep moving forward, engaging everyone in the school community, dealing with persuassion, precision, professionalism and perseverance (as professor Carol Campbell mentioned some time ago).

At last, but not least, I'd like to thank people at OISE for receiving us so warmly, worried about every single detail in our stay in Toronto. And for caring and making the logo there at OISE, come true in our lives... NEVER EVER STOP LEARNING... Because we all did, and a lot!
Thank you very much... from the bottom of our hearts.

SuOn College: Jiangsu Principals - Advanced Program in Leadership Development

suonOISE Continuing Education welcomed 100 high school principals from Jiangsu, China in 2011 for School Leadership Programs. Most of the delegates are leading reputable senior high schools who are striving for high teaching standard and cultivating creative graduates for university education. Effective leadership is core to their success in today’s knowledge economy and globalization.

The guests worked with Canadian resource professors and educators in understanding and exchanged ideas on essential aspects and insights of school leadership in 21st century, including how to develop the leadership team for school improvement; assessment and evaluation in schools – what is new in research and practice.  After visiting some Toronto schools, the Chinese colleagues expressed most passionately in the round-tables their outstanding impression on Canada’s inclusive education and multi-cultural classrooms.  They stated in concluding session that

“Canada and China vary in historical, cultural and socio-economic background, yet, our goal in educating young citizens is highly congruent, and that is optimizing our education system to cultivate students with justified world view and maximized capacity. We have seen and learnt a lot how Canadian educators pursue high standard by not compromising equality and equity – it enlightened our minds in school leadership”.

OISE Dean Julia O’Sullivan, Registrar Don MacMillan, Director of Continuing Education Barbara Bodkin and Senior Coordinator of International Initiatives Julia Pan visited China and Jiangsu Provincial Education Ministry, the sponsor of the above program, in 2011.

Law Works: Education Law Institute

lawworksEvery year, OISE partners with the exceptional law firm of Borden Ladner Gervais, the TDSB and TCDSB to develop a conference that ensures that school administrators and superintendents keep up to date with the changing legal environment that affects their roles.

Our 6th annual education law conference was a hit with participants from the GTA Boards as well as Boards from across Ontario.  Case-study sessions were led by experienced and knowledgeable lawyers, supported by superintendents.   Many participants wished that they could have attended more of the sessions.  As a result, we are posting the power-point presentations from all the sessions to help fill in the gaps, and to serve as a review for all participants.
